Look closely at all of the ancient ruins still standing today. The pyramids in Egypt; the temples in Greece; ancient Mayan cities and Aztec temples; the Great Wall spanning the length of China. What do all of these structures have in common?

They were built of brick and stone. They were crafted by masons.

While wooden structures could theoretically last as long as one made of stone, it would take far more maintenance than even the simplest of stone structures requires. While it may seem that a stone or brick home is more expensive to build than a wooden home, the cost of maintenance over the life of the structure will be far less for a stone structure than it would be for a wooden one. Wood eventually rots. Wood is flammable. Wood splits under the strain of high winds. Wood is vulnerable to termites, carpenter bees, and other such insects.

Stone and brick carry no such flaws. Masons employ materials that are more durable and stronger than wood. Not only that, but stone and brick structures are better insulated than their wooden counterparts. This keeps the elements of nature and noise pollution from disturbing you inside your home. Stone won’t ever have to be replaced, whereas wood will.

A more modern technique involves the use of concrete with steel reinforcement in making homes. This has many of the benefits of a structure made of stone with a significant decrease in cost because the materials used are completely manmade. Concrete can be made to resemble virtually any material, so your home can look warm and inviting while still being made from the same materials that military bunkers are built out of.

You will need a Long Island mason no matter which of these materials you use. Let the experts decide which material best suits your personal tastes and your budget. Once it’s known which is best for you, they can get started on your new home.

Have you seen many wooden structures that have lasted as long as the Coliseum in Rome? If any have survived it’s been through constant maintenance and possible replacement. Stone structures have survived centuries of neglect.

Stone will weather any storm. Long Islanders, choose carefully! Go with New York masonry.
