Count of Monte Cristo, 1934
By admin. Filed in Uncategorized |The original Count of Monte Cristo has to be my all time favorite movie. I don’t read a lot, however I do like Alexandre Dumas. He is the author of The Three Musketeers as well as The Count of Monte Cristo. The story centers around a young man, Edmond Dantes, who is wrongfully imprisoned and later escapes and get vigilante-style justice on those responsible for putting him in the infamous fortress turned prison, the Chateau D’If. Edmond befriends a fellow prisoner who claims to know the location of the treasure of Monte Cristo. Edmund uses the riches to exact his revenge and get the girl. Lots of attention has been given to Shakespeare, Dickens, and other writers but during Black History Month when I was in school, I came to find out that Dumas was a black man. Being new to America (from Korea), I found it very interesting and became engaged with all of his writings. I have seen the newest Hollywood version of The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caveziel, as well as Richard Chamberlain’s 70’s version, but neither come close to the drama and passion from the 1930’s version. If you’ve seen the rest, rent the 1934 version and see the best.
