Copper Sink

Back in June 1996, on a warm summery day, the IRA set off a 3000 pound bomb in the middle of Manchester city centre. Thankfully, the police had received plenty of warning that a bomb had been planted, so nobody was seriously injured. However, the bomb caused £700 million damage to the city's infrastructure and a lot of buildings were badly damaged. One such building was the Royal Exchange theatre, a beautiful Grade II listed building from the Victorian age.

My dad, now retired, worked in demolition and waste recycling and won the tender to clean up the centre including the Royal Exchange. In the theatre, there was a lot of stuff to empty from the building, and my dad was told to leave certain rooms but gut the rest of the rooms. In one room, there was complete chaos and the only object to make it in one piece was an old Victorian copper kitchen sink. My Dad was entranced by it and asked the contractors if he could keep it for his own, they agreed he could.

My dad was stood on my doorstep that evening when I got home from work, holding this sink. I was completely puzzled, but when I saw the sink, that was it, I was smitten. My dad knew I was in the middle of a kitchen refurb and knew some of fittings including a sink were still yet to be chosen but I was thinking of a Belfast sink. Belfast double sink As soon as I saw the copper sink, I knew I wanted it.

kitchen sinks The kitchen sink was old, but still looked stunning. The inside of the bowl had a delicate symmetrical star motifs and rolled rim. It had come from France in the 1890s but my Dad was convinced it was older. My dad fitted it into my kitchen and it is now the crowning glory of my kitchen. I never ever thought to look at copper sinks when it came to designing the interior of my kitchen, but I'm totally obsessed with them now. All my friends are envious of my sink and have found a copper sink stockists – they're all the rage in my neck of the woods.
